IIT Kanpur Design Programme (DP)

Design Programme at IIT Kanpur, is conceived as a centre for creative minds, which stimulates the students to bring in synthesis of varied knowledge domains for creative problem solving. The students, through their practical projects, are taught to address social issues by developing and providing innovative design solutions through a multi-disciplinary approach. Not only it encourages new and radical concepts, but also it facilitates the “concepts to function” transition. The programme acts as a hub which fosters interactivity among students, faculty and industry to create a complete learning experience.

Design Programme encourages students from a wide variety of backgrounds and stages of professional experience. The core courses emphasize creativity and concepts in a broad spectrum. A core laboratory for the ideation, incubation, innovation and implementation (4i laboratory) facilitates the students to transform their creative ideas into products. Many other advanced laboratories and studios of the institute are available to the students to study form and aesthetics, ergonomics, material testing, computer-aided manufacturing, animation and special effects, opto-electronics, microprocessor and micro-controller, virtual instrumentation, aerodynamics and polymers. In addition, the Media Technology Center that houses the state of the art equipment and software encourages the students to explore the fields of media and communication.

Eligibility

Candidates having a bachelor’s degree in engineering/design/architecture/fine arts and a valid CEED/GATE score are eligible to apply for the Master of Design programme. CEED/GATE score is used for short listing the applicants. The short listed applicants will be called for a written test and interview to test their creativity and inclination for innovation. Master of Design Program (MDes), Department of Design, IIT Guwahati

Amongst the premier technical institutions in the country, the Department of Design, IIT Guwahati has commenced its two year post graduate Master of Design (MDes) program from the academic year 2007-2008.

IIT Guwahati now offers Design programs at all three educational levels:

  • 4 year Bachelor of Design program leading to BDes degree
  • 2 year Master of Design program leading to MDes degree and
  • Doctoral studies in Design leading to PhD

The programs encourage inter disciplinary and intra disciplinary studies that integrate holistic perspectives in creative pursuits engaging design and technology as applicable to the following thrust areas viz. New Product Design and Development; Communication Design and New Media; Usability Engineering and Interaction Design including HCI and Ergonomics.

The 2 year Master in Design (MDes – Design) program offers students advanced elective based studies in the above fields, encouraging more real life projects involving intensive research work. The student can choose from a range of courses including Design core/Technology/Electives/Projects in the field of their interest. Presently the courses cover the domain of Product Design and Development, Design Semantics, Usability Engineering, Interaction Design, Experiential Design, Environmental Design, Human-Computer Interaction Design, Ergonomics, studies in Occupational Hazard and Safety, and Design Management, New Media, Communication Design and Film etc.

The students are encouraged to undertake projects involving intensive analysis and synthesis in the form of conceptual design, simulation and making functional prototype.

Institute Teaching Assistantship

For the MDes Program, assistantships are provided to regular students (Indian nationals) at the rate of Rs.8000 per month as per terms and conditions of the Institute.

Terms & Conditions:

Selected regular candidates will get Institute Assistantship subject to the conditions prescribed by the regulations which include:

i)  A student must have a valid CEED score at the time of admission (or B Des / B Arch / B Tech degree
from an IIT with CPI 7.0 or above).

ii)   Students receiving assistantship from the Institute or from any other funding agencies will be
required to perform academic duties assigned to them by the department as per rules in force from
time to time.

iii)  The continuation of the assistantship/fellowship will be subject to satisfactory performance of the
duties assigned by the department and satisfactory progress in the postgraduate program.

  • iv)            Financial assistance will be for a period of two years.

Eligibility for Regular MDes Candidates

a) 4-year Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in Design, Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design or a
Design related field.

OR

4-year Professional Diploma in Design of NID or Professional Diploma of CEPT (5-year programme)

b) A minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades in the qualifying degree/diploma.

IIT Delhi Master of Industrial Design (M.Des) Programme

The two-year M.Des. programme caters to the requirement of industry for innovators and designers capable of creating high quality design of products for competitive markets. It is open only to graduates in Engineering and Architecture. Candidates for full time M.Des. with Institute fellowship or self-finance must have a valid CEED score. GATE score is not considered.

Eligibility

Applicants for the M.Des. Industrial Design Programme at IIT Delhi must have minimum CGPA of 6.75 on a 10 point scale or 60% marks in aggregate for General Category. For the reserved category, this is relaxed by 5%. Candidates should confirm their eligibility and CEED score requirements from prospectus available at the IIT Delhi website. Full-time sponsored candidates are also advised to clear the CEED Test which is essentially an aptitude test. There is also reservation of seats for OBC Candidates. The focus of the programme is upon the art and science of industrial design for creating innovative product concepts. The curriculum includes aesthetics, ergonomics, communication skills, materials, design methodology, design for manufacture, CAD, user interface studies, behavioural science, and professional practice. It involves extensive studio work with hands on practice and is a project based, industry and consumer oriented programme. The thesis projects are often supported by the industry and there is close interface with the industry throughout the programme of study. The programme emphasizes development of free hand conceptualization skills, CAD modeling skills on mid level platforms and above all design thinking skills and detailing over a diverse range of products.

IIT Bombay Masters (M.Des.) and Ph.D Progams in Design at IDC

The prime objective Industrial Design Centre (IDC)  Of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay ,is an integrated and interdisciplinary approach towards design education. The design training at IDC is intended to develop an attitude among the young aspirants towards problem solving in design. The programme is designed in order to prepare them to go into the field and face a wide range of design challenges at the end of their education at the centre.

Ph.D. Programme in Design

A Ph.D. programme in Design has been recently started at IDC. Information on the programme may be obtained from the website of IDC, IIT Bombay.

Master in Design Programme

The courses for M.Des. commence with developing in the students perceptual abilities, skills and techniques, social and general awareness. It leads them to a series of projects, characteristic of the problems of a country like India and pertaining to the industry, government, private institutions and other organisations.

Eligibility for M.Des. Programme

The candidates should have a minimum of 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ST) or equivalent grades in the qualifying examination (as listed below).

Industrial Design:

(i) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Architecture / Design/ Interior Design, or equivalent

(ii) Professional Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT, or equivalent)

Mobility and Transportation design (subject to approval):

1)   A minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grades (6.0/10.0 or 2.4/4.0) at the qualifying examination.

2)   Valid TOEFL score (for candidates from non-English speaking countries)

IISC Bangalore M.Des Admissions at CPDM

The Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM) of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore aims to pursue excellence in teaching, research and industrial interaction activity in the field of product design beyond the graduate level. It offers a two-year Master of Design (M.Des.) programme in product design and engineering as well as the research degrees of M.Sc. (Engg.) and Ph.D. in design.

CPDM is well equipped with advanced infrastructure for carrying out research in different aspects of design including creativity, human factors, biomechanics, safety, CAD, CAE, PLM and design collaboration.

The M.Des. programme aims at developing skills, knowledge and aptitude among students so that they can, through creative problem solving, bring about innovation in the product manufacturing industry. The students are trained to approach product design from a holistic viewpoint integrating, in a balanced and harmonious manner, the industrial design and the engineering design perspectives to come up with products that are well engineered, aesthetic and ergonomic and with a better manufacturability.

The M.Des. curriculum requires a student to complete 64 credits consisting of 48 credits of core/elective courses and a 16-credit major project. The major project involves needs analysis, conceptual design, simulation and functional prototype fabrication of a new product with full documentation at every stage. The societal responsibility of the designer is sensitized through different project works during the M.Des. programme.

Eligibility for applying to M.Des. programme is a degree in engineering / design / architecture. Selection for admission is based on performance in a design aptitude test (DAT) and interview to be conducted at the Centre towards the end of April /early May. Short-listing for DAT is done on the basis of applicants’ CEED or GATE score.

Candidates who are awaiting their CEED/GATE score can apply by quoting their CEED/GATE registration number. Institute will get their scores from the CEED/GATE office.

XLRI Jamshedpur invites applications for Full Time Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) for the session starting 2010

Eligibility and Admission Process

Applicants for the FPM should have a Master’ s degree or its equivalent in any discipline with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST candidates) , with a Bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification obtained after a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary education or equivalent and three years of relevant work experience.

OR

CA/ICWA or CS with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST candidate) and three years of relevant work experience.

OR

BE/B.Tech degrees or its equivalent with at least 60% marks (50% for SC/ST candidates) and four years of relevant work experience are eligible to apply in any of the areas.

The applicant must hold a Bachelors/Masters degree of any of the universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, or possess an equivalent qualification from an institution approved by AICTE.

The calendar for the admission of the FPM candidates is same as that for the students of the PGPs. The admission requires two sequential online processes.

Interested candidates are required to (1) apply online to take the XLRI Admissions Test (XAT), and (2) apply online to XLRI for the FPM.

Those who will be taking the XAT should visit http://www.xlri.edu and follow the instructions for applying to XLRI for the FPM.

Instead of taking the XAT, FPM candidates can also submit the result of GMAT/GRE/GATE/UGC JRF (research) exam taken during January 2008 and December 2009. Those who have done their PGP from XLRI any IIM, MDI Gurgaon, FMS Delhi, or XIM Bhubaneswar with a CQPI of at least 6.00/8.00 or equivalent will also be exempted from appearing in the XAT. Those who will not be taking the XAT should visit www.xlri.ac.in/research and follow the instructions for applying to XLRI for the FPM.

Short listed candidates will be required to appear for a personal interview during the later half of March or early April at XLRI, Jamshedpur for the final selection. The to-and- fro sleeper class train fare, by shortest route, will be reimbursed to the candidates who are called for personal interview.

LIBA Chennai PGDM Admissions 2010

Layola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), Chennai  announces admission to Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) (Two Year Full Time Programme) for session starting 2010

Eligiblity

For admission into the full time PGDM programme the candidate should be a graduate in any discipline from a recognised university and should have secured a minimum of 60% marks in the aggregate. Students completing their examinations by June 07, 2010 may also apply.

Admission Procedure

1.  Register for XAT 2010 with the required fees at www.xlri.edu and obtain XAT ID. Last date for XAT 2010 online registration is November 30, 2009. Only candidates who have applied to XAT 2010 are eligible for admission to LIBA.

IGNOU Online Post Graduate Diploma in E-Learning

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offers the Online Post Graduate Diploma in E-Learning (PGDEL) from January 2010 to develop professional competencies in offering online programmes in the Country. The programme is offered through the Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE).

Target Group
The programme aims at developing competencies in design, development, implementation and management of online programmes at all levels of education, including the corporate training. Thus, the target group of the programme includes teachers, trainers, training managers, instructional designers, and course developers in schools, colleges, universities, and business and industry.

Duration
The duration of the programme shall be one year. Students not completing course(s) in the specified duration shall re-register on pro-rata basis, and compete the programme in 2 years time to earn the PG Diploma.

Number of Seats: 25

Eligibility
The eligibility for PGDEL is graduation in any discipline. Preference shall be given to higher degree holders.

Admission Process:

  • Student apply online, and send their form and copy of the certificates/credentials to the Programme Coordinator at STRIDE.
  • Upon selection, the offer of admission letter shall be sent to the students with instructions to pay fees online/ Challan/ DD.
  • On receipt of fees, admission is confirmed, and enrollment number and Identity Card issued.

Selection Process:

  • Merit based admission shall be given with reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates as per rules.
  • Rank list of the candidates shall be prepared for each category of students as per the following criteria:
    • 50% weight to Marks in the Graduation;
    • 20% weight to Marks in Post Graduation (only one PG degree to be considered);
    • 10 marks each for MPhil and PhD;
    • 10 marks for Work experience in University/ College/ School level teaching/professional/research/administrative experience or Work experience as trainer/ training manager/ instructional designer in the business/ industry environment. 0.5 mark for each year of experience with maximum of 20.
