Kerala 8th std English Chapter 1 A long Walk with Granny Notes
#1
The story "A Long Walk with Granny" by Ruskin Bond is about a young boy named Mani and his grandmother (Granny) who live in a village. Granny has poor eyesight because her old glasses are scratched and weak. Mani and his father convince her to visit an eye hospital in Mussoorie to get new glasses. Granny is hesitant to leave Mani, whom she raised since his mother’s death, but agrees when Mani offers to go with her.

Their journey starts with a walk to Nain, where they stay at Mani’s uncle’s house. The next day, they take a bus to Mussoorie, but a landslide blocks the road. Instead of turning back, Granny and Mani decide to walk a shortcut through the mountains. They face rain, mist, and tough paths but reach Mussoorie. At the eye hospital, the doctor gives Granny new glasses, and she can see clearly again. They buy some items like a pullover, seeds, and a cowbell before returning home. The story shows the strong bond between Mani and Granny and their determination to face challenges together.

Important Points

1. Granny’s Poor Eyesight: Granny’s old glasses are scratched and weak, making it hard for her  to see. She needs new glasses from the eye hospital in Mussoorie.
2. Granny’s Love for Mani: Granny raised Mani since he was a baby and doesn’t want to leave  him alone. She agrees to the trip only when Mani joins her.
3. The Journey:
o Mani and Granny walk to Nain in the rain, enjoying nature like parrots, blackberries, and green fields.
o A landslide blocks the bus route to Mussoorie, so they take a tough mountain path.
o They stay in a dharmasala (a simple shelter) in Mussoorie because hotels are expensive.
4. At the Eye Hospital: The doctor says Granny’s old glasses are so bad they belong in a museum. New glasses help her see better, and she happily sees Mani clearly.
5. Their Bond: Mani supports Granny by carrying things and guiding her, while Granny stays strong and cheerful despite her age and weak eyes.
6. Shopping in Mussoorie: They buy a pullover for Mani’s father, seeds, bulbs, a cowbell, and new shoes for Mani.
7. Nature and Challenges: The story describes beautiful landscapes (hills, forests, rivers) and challenges like rain, mist, and a landslide.
8. Granny’s Courage: At 70, Granny walks long distances and faces difficulties without complaining, showing her strength.
