A Bachelors three-year degree in biological sciences is essential. This could include specialization in general biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, botany or zoology. Molecular and cellular biology and botany are important subjects as well.

A degree in chemistry is also an excellent foundation and chemical engineering is a very marketable specialty. Other specialties in demand in this industry are environmental science, toxicology pharmacology and agricultural science. A B.Sc, B.Tech and BE in science or engineering is in demand by biotechnology companies as a basic credential for those who want to work in sales, marketing or other business areas.
Scientists with a Masters degree hold jobs similar to those held by people with Bachelors degrees, but the advantage of a M.Sc degree is that it gives students much more hands-on laboratory experience.
A doctoral degree gives one much greater control in what one researches. Ph.Ds design the research process, directing the activities of technicians with a Bachelors and Masters degree.
