Managerial personnel appraisal may he of Iwo types—(1) Initial appraisal, and (2) Promotional appraisal.

1. Initial Appraisal—It is meant for persons who are selected for management trainees. During training period, a regular appraisal is made to determine their performance on the job and also their future managerial potentials. The purpose of this appraisal is also to find out if the individual has an aptitude for the job in which he is being trained. In companies, where there is no programme for management training the worth of the new incumbent is evaluated on the job during probation period.

2. Promotional Appraisal—In order to locate and identify the personnel for promotion to the higher job from within the organisation is the main purpose of such appraisal. The personnel are selected for the training after having been appraised of the worth on the present job and potential for higher job. It is also known as 'Potential Appraisal'. .

Difference between Initial and Promotional Appraisal

The difference between these two types of managerial personnel appraisals is clear from the above discussion. However, a few points of difference are being given hereunder:

1. Initial appraisal is meant for new entrants in management cadre whereas promotional appraisal is meant for existing personnel who may be regarded for promotions and future development.

2. The main objective of initial appraisal is to identify the worth of the individual for the present job while the objective of promotional appraisal is to evaluate the potentials of the individual for future development.

3. Managerial qualities are the main consideration in initial appraisal while experience and ability are the main points of consideration in promotional appraisal.
