Leadership is the process of inducing subordinates by managers to work with confidence and goal. In this process a leader performs various types of functions. Some of the important functions are as follows:
(1) Determination of goals—A leader performs the function of laying down goals and policies for the followers. He acts as a guide in interpreting the goals and policies. He has to assign reason to his every command.
(2) Organisation—A good leader helps in structuring the organisation on scientific lines with a view to making its various parts operate efficiently. A leader acts like the captain of the team, and he has to share his responsibilities and authority among the various organisational positions.
(3) Coordination—A leader not only defines the individual goals, but also ensures that various components work like a well-knit team. For this, a leader has to reconcile the goals of the individuals with the organisational goals and creates a community of interests. He keeps himself informed about the working of the group and shares information with the group for the coordination of its efforts. For proper coordination, he has to maintain an effective communication system.
(4) Motivation—A leader acts like a captain of the team. He tries to win the confidence of his colleagues and subordinates. He sustains enthusiasm for organisational goals by inspiring them. He also adopts motivational devices to stimulate them for performing their duties with interests, loyally and sincerity.
(5) Representation—A leader represents the group. He lakes initiative in all matters of interest to group. He also attempts to fulfill the psychological needs of his followers.
