The importance of supervision may be judged from the following facts:
(1) A link between management and workers — A supervisor presents the management ideas, thoughts and desires to the workers and, on the other hand, conveys the feelings, grievances of the workers to the management. Thus, supervisor is a link between workers and management.
(2) Motivation—The main function of supervision is to motivate the workers to work hard. A supervisor is in a constantly daily touch with the operators and holds the key to effective direction of human beings. Through his influence on workers and work environments, he can contribute much to induce the men to work hard.
(3) Better industrial relations-An effective supervision leads to better industrial relations because several disputes and problems are solved through an effective supervision. An efficient supervisor clarifies the management point of view to the workers and, on the other hand, he explains the feeling of the workers to the management. It promotes good industrial relations because workers cooperate him.
(4) Increase in efficiency of workers—Supervision not only checks the misuse of time and resources but it helps in promoting the working efficiency by giving the personnel situational encouragements through including their good services in the files.
(5) Supervision ensures the utilisation of resources in the best interests of the enterprise. It guarantees the proper functioning of the work units and removes the minor maladies in the utilisation of labour force.
