Hawthrone experiments are an important landmark in (lie history of the Human Relations movement. It was Elton Mayo and his associates who conducted studies in the Hawthrone Works of Western Electric Company Chicago, U.S.A. between 1924 and 1932. The study covered more than 30,000 workers. By these studies, the researchers discovered many areas of the application of human relations approach. The series of experiments may be classified into three parts:
(a) Illumination experiments
(b) Relay Assembly test room experiments

Apart from these studies researchers also conducted mass interview, personnel counselling and psychological testing.
The researchers' general conclusion was that non-logical behaviour or sentiments among workers must be considered along with economic and other logical factors as influences the work group. An organisation is not merely a formal arrangement of men and functions; it is a social system which can be operated successfully only with the application of the principles of psychology and other behavioural science. To quote Hawthorne researcher "Subordinates could not be forced into cooperation strategy (for some) psychology (for others) and understanding (for a few) had to be substituted for force in human relations.
