Loughborough University (UK) launches MSc Courses
#1
The Department of Social Sciences at UK based Loughborough University has introduced two MSc courses in two new and fast-growing areas of communication - Conversation Analysis and Discursive Psychology - and is inviting applications for the same. A centre of excellence in teaching and research, the Department of Social Sciences has been ranked 8th for its Sociology and Social Policy in the Times Good University Guide and 7th for its Media Studies and for Sociology and Social Policy in The Guardian. The courses will be taught by the very top people in the world in both Conversation Analysis and Discursive Psychology.

The MSc programme in Conversation Analysis will deal with the study of the ways in which speakers use different structures of conversation to perform their social actions. The MSc in Discursive Psychology will focus on the study of how psychological phenomena such as knowledge, memory, motivation, attitudes and feelings are constructed and managed in talk and texts, and the consequences for people relationships with one another. It introduces a new way for answering psychological questions. The programmes will provide the opportunity for students to develop not only the research skills, but also the analysis of language, social interaction and society. The modules of the courses will cover the process of collecting, transcribing and analysing data – from everyday phone calls, family mealtimes and playground interactions to clinical encounters, emergency helplines and courtrooms. Other modules will investigate the role that various forms of software and technology support analysis, as well as teaching you how to generate findings that are useful to practitioners, emergency help lines and courtrooms.

The fee structure for the one year full time programmes is £13750 for non-EU/UK students. Both courses will be available as part-time options, and can also be taken as either a postgraduate certificate or a postgraduate diploma. The courses commence in October 2014 and students are advised to send the applications by 23rd May. Students willing to apply must have a minimum of 60% in Social or Health Sciences, Humanities, Linguistics, or associated subjects. The students who wish to apply for the courses can visit http://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/howtoapply/.
