What is meant by written communication? What are its advantages and disadvantages?

When communication of ideas, orders, instructions etc. are resorted to writing, it is termed as written communication. For example, handbook, notice-boards, new sheet, magazines, report etc.
Advantages of Written communication
The following are the advantages of written communication:
1. It has permanent effect on the recipient.
2. It gives time to the recipient to think, analyse and then decide the course of action.
3. It is helpful in reducing tension, disputes etc.
4. It is only way where: (/) the communication is lengthy and is meant for a large number of persons, (ii) the recipient and communicator are at a distant place, and (iii) policy matters, service conditions, secret orders etc. are to be communicated.
Disadvantages of written communication
The following are the main disadvantages of written communication:
1. It is time consuming. It cannot be brief as possible.
2. It is seldom flexible.
3. It results red-tapism.
4. It cannot remain as confidential as it might be intended to.
5. It is a costly system of communication.
6. It lacks personal touch.
