The department admits graduates from all faculties for the postgraduate course.
The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies conducts a four-semester (two-year) MA/ M.Sc. course. Each semester has four courses worth four credits for each course.

The number of credits for the MA/M.Sc. course is 64. Evaluation is done on the basis of continuous internal assessment for each course. The division of marks for internal and semester end examinations are 40 per cent and 60 per cent respectively.
The compulsory courses cover the areas of contemporary strategy, international relations, national security, geopolitics and military geography, defense economics and science and technology and its impact on security. Students have the option of preparing a dissertation as an area studies course.
M.Phil, and Ph.D. courses are also offered. M.Phil, is a one-year course of two semesters. It comprises three courses covering research methodology, study of conflict and peace and study of contemporary literature.
Students should write a dissertation based on secondary sources on a topic of their choice. The minimum eligibility prescribed for admission is a second class postgraduate degree in defence and strategic studies.
Students appearing for final-year examinations in May can also apply. An entrance test will be conducted for admissions. The notification can be expect¬ed in June/July.
For details, contact The Head, Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, University of Pune, Pune - 411 007. (Phone: 91 20 5696061 exten¬sion - 2174), e-mail is ddss@u-nipune.ernet.in

The School of Political and International Studies, Chepauk Campus, offers MA and M.Phil, courses in Defence and Strategic Studies. Admission is based on an entrance test. Admission notification will appear in leading dailies in April.

Those who successfully complete the above courses should qualify the UGC NET/JRF and Lectureship for getting a lecturer post or for undergoing research
leading to Ph.D. and can also try for employment in Defense as well as the Civil Services
