The IPRS are awarded on academic merit and research capacity to suitably qualified graduates from developed countries. Graduates must be eligible to commence a higher degree by research, in priority areas of national interest, at Australian higher educational institutions.
Before applying applicants should ensure that the programme of research they are proposing to undertake is consistent with the areas listed as priority areas of Australian national interest.
The purpose of the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) programme is to attract top quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength in higher education institutions and to support Australia's research effort.
The programme offers students the opportunity to obtain a postgraduate qualification and to gain experience with leading Australian researchers. The scholarships cover tuition fees only. About 300 scholarships are offered yearly to foreign students for either PhD or Masters level for undertaking quality research (fundamental or applied) in areas of research specialisation in individual institutions. These areas are the ones in which the institutions have particular expertise. Successful applicants in most instances become members of a research team working under the direction of senior researchers. No age restriction applies for applicants.
The scholarship covers only the tuition fees set by the institution and payable for each year of the course. The duration of the scholarship is normally limited to three years for students enrolled in PhD degree programmes and two years for students enrolled in Masters degree programmes by research. Extensions may be granted in certain circumstances.
Holders of IPRS are currently given basic health cover.
