(1) There should be an agreement on the provisions regarding lay-off between trade union and management. The policy of lay off should be designed in the light of such agreement.
(2) It should be specified in the policy what measures should be taken by the employer before he is forced to take such decision.
(3) Length of service should be reckoned at the time of decision of lay off, worker at the bottom of seniority list should be laid off first and at the top in the last but at the time of reemployment senior most persons should be re-employed first and junior most in the last.
(4) A proper notice of lay off should be given to employees in advance to avoid the agitations.
(5) The company may make an effort to place laid off employees with other firms in the community
(6) In temporary lay off, severance pay may be provided by some concerns of repute.
