According to Kimball and Kimball, "motion study may be defined as the study of the movements, whether a machine or an operator, in performing an operation for the purpose of eliminating useless motion and of arranging sequences of useful motions in the most efficient order."
According to Frank Gilbreth "Motion study is the science of eliminating wastefulness resulting from unnecessary, ill-directed and inefficient motions. The aim of motion study is to find and perpetuate the scheme of least waste methods of labour." Motion study consists of dividing the work into most fundamental elements possible, studying them separately and in relation to one another. Motion study aims to improve jobs and tries to do following things:
(1) to get rid of human movements
(2) to shorten the movement
(3) to make movements less tiring .
