Following are the main types of separations:

(1) Resignation (2) Suspension (3) Discharge or dismissal or Retrenchment (4) Lay off (5) Absenteeism.

(1) Resignation Resignations are generally voluntary. Employees resign on the grounds of health, physical disability, better opportunities elsewhere or maladjustment with the company policy and officers etc. Sometimes resignations are compulsory when an employee is asked to put in his resignation if he wants to avoid termination of his services on the ground of gross negligence of duty or some serious charge against him. In case of resignation, it is useful to arrange an "exit interview" to try to know the real reason of his leaving the job.

(2) Suspension—Suspension is a serious punishment and is generally awarded only after a proper enquiry. For reasons of discipline, a workman may be suspended without prejudice during the course of any enquiry. During suspension the employee receives a subsistence allowance.

(3) Discharge—A discharge involves permanent separation of an employee from the payroll for violation of company rules or for inadequate performance.

(4) Lay off- A lay off refers to an indefinite separation of the employee from the pay role due to the factors beyond the control of the employer.

(5) Absenteeism-Absence is the failure of a worker to report for work when he is scheduled to work. It is voluntary on the part of the employees because its causes are personal to the individuals concerned.
