Motivation and morale are different concepts, though inter-related. Motivation is an urge or drive which impels a person to act in a particular direction to achieve a certain goal. It is an individual phenomenon and applies to individuals. On the other hand, morale is a long term and total situation affecting organisational work and environment and enthusiasm. Morale applies to groups. Morale is a group phenomenon — common attitudes of employees toward organisation management work situation and co-workers.
Motivated workers contribute to their capacity. Thus productivity and motivation are positively related to each other. On the other hand, high morale may be associated with low productivity because workers device satisfactions through fulfdment of social needs for belonging and affdiation by conforming to group norms.
