The Airports Authority of India gives notification in prominent dailies whenever there are requirements for ATCs. Interested candidates need to apply at this juncture using this notification. This is followed by the candidate having to appear for the civil ATC entrance examination
Training for the job is imparted only after recruitment. And so, following their recruitment by AAI, the ATCs are sent to the Civil Aviation Training College in Allahabad for formal training. This is divided into three different stages. The first module comprises "Ab-initio Training" and is provided over a 24-week period. After this, the trainee ATCs are posted at different airports, where they are given on-the-job training.
Following assessment, rating and licensing, they are considered well prepared to work in their respective airports for tower control and approach control. This entire process takes one—two years after recruitment. Thereafter, the ATCs are sent for the "Area Control" course. This is followed by on-the-job training at different air stations, where they are rated once again. Finally, they come back to Civil Aviation Training College, Allahabad, for a course in "Radar Control."
