There are specific regulations governing the profession of surveyors. They must possess a license issued by the Controller of Insurance under the Ministry of Finance. A candidate fulfilling any one of the following criteria is eligible for a license:
•Fellowship or Associateship through the examination held by the Institute of Insurance Surveyors and Adjusters (IISA), Mumbai.
•Degree or diploma in architecture from a recognized university or institute.
•Fellowship or Associateship of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAl) or Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI).
•Degree or diploma from a recognized engineering institute.
•Degree or diploma in naval architecture.
After obtaining the license, a surveyor may be empanelled by any or all of the insurance companies.
