Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship for Research Students 2022- Application Guidelines

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to
international students who wish to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities as Research Students (either
regular students or non-regular students) under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program.

Level of Studies

Research studies (possible to continue to Master’s/Ph.D course)

Application Period

20 April-16 May, 2021

Age

Under 35 years old (Applicants, in principle, must have been born on or after April 2, 1987)

Fields of study

Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or its related field. Moreover, the fields of study must be subjects which applicants will be able to study and research in graduate courses at Japanese universities. The fields of study may be restricted to particular fields by the Japanese Embassy or Consulatein the applicant’s country. The general classifications are:

Qualifications and Conditions

Nationality: Applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.

Age: Applicants, in principle, must have been born on or after April 2, 1987.

Academic Background: Applicants must satisfy the conditions for admission to either a master’s or doctoral course at a Japanese graduate school in which they wish to first enroll as specified in the detailed guideline.

In addition to the Qualifications and Conditions listed in the detailed guideline, the following would apply:

1. For Research Student / Master’s course / Doctoral course (first phase)
Bachelor’s Degree in the relevant field with minimum 65% marks. The candidates should obtain their mark sheet and degree on or before 30th September 2022 for the October 2022 batch.

2. Doctoral course (second phase)
Master’s degree in the relevant field with minimum 65% marks. Candidates should have practical research/teaching/work experience after obtaining the prescribed qualification on or before 30th September 2022 for the October 2022 batch.

Health: Applicants must submit a health certificate in the prescribed format signed by a physician attesting that
the applicant has no physical or mental conditions hindering the applicant’s study in Japan.

Arrival in Japan: Applicants must choose and fill in the Application Form by selecting the April or October term. Then they need to depart from their home country and arrive in Japan on the specified dates as given in the detailed guideline , a change in the arrival period is not permitted after the submission of the Application Form.

Visa Requirement: An applicant shall, in principle, newly obtain a “Student” visa at the Japanese diplomatic
mission located in the applicant’s country of nationality, and enter Japan with the residence status of “Student.”

Term of scholarship

Non-regular students:
The scholarship period will last from April, September or October 2022 until the end of March 2024.

Regular students enrolled in master’s, doctoral, or professional graduate courses:
Regardless of the date of arrival, the scholarship period shall be the necessary period for the completion of the respective regular course (hereinafter referred to as “the standard period of study”. See “13. ACADEMIC PATHWAY FOR RESEARCH STUDENTS” for the standard period of study for each course).

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

(1) Allowance: The amounts listed below shall be paid depending on the course enrolled in. A supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen per month will be added to the monthly scholarship amount for the grantees studying or conducting research in specially designated regions. Due to the situation of the Japanese Government’s budget, the amount of payment may be subject to change each fiscal year. If a grantee is absent from the university for an extended period, the scholarship shall be suspended for that period.
① Students receiving the preparatory education and non-regular students: 143,000 yen per month
② Regular students enrolled in master’s or professional degree courses: 144,000 yen per month
③ Regular students enrolled in doctoral courses: 145,000 yen per month.

Education fees

Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be paid by MEXT. The entrance examination fee, however, will be borne by the grantees if they cannot proceed to the master’s or doctoral course or cannot be admitted by the university.

Traveling Expenses

Round-trip airfare will be provided

*Please read the “Important note” carefully and prepare the application form.

*When applicants’ fill “Field of Study and Research Plan” and “Placement Preference Application Form”, it is better for applicants to refer to Embassy’s website and JASSO’s website Study in Japan .

*Application received after the aforesaid date and time will be automatically rejected. Also, other form of file, such as handwritten followed by scan, PDF, PowerPoint, Google Drive, link to Google Drive, Google Docs, etc., will also be rejected automatically. 

*No supporting documents are required to be submitted with the preliminary application.

*You will only submit the application form along with supporting documents, as mentioned in the guidelines, only if you are shortlisted after the Preliminary Application round.
