Collective bargaining should be distinguished from labour-management cooperation. In collective bargaining, each party tries to outguess the other, to hide its own motives, to play up the opponent and to play down those it receives. Cooperation occurs only when the "Cards are face up on the table".
In collective bargaining, each party fights for as big a piece of the pie as can be obtained. In cooperation, each party strives to increase the size of the pie so that there will be more for everyone who partakes of it.
