In order to apply for a student visa a valid passport, entitlement to university admission, as recognized in Germany, evidence of previous academic performance and proof that complete financial support for one year is guaranteed are required. The VFS is close to Rs. 4000/- from August 2011. You should a complete medical check-up from a qualified medical doctor.
If you are from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand as well as the Union territories, you need to send application to German Embassy office, New Delhi.

Firstly you need to figure out type of visa required which is defined by your purpose of visit. You can go on to vfs.com  and check their.Â
Once you know the type of visa you wish to apply then you can download checklist of the documents required for visa. Vfs is a global body which helps you with the documents and so you can either visit their centre or check their website.Â
Next, you need to take an appointment in german consulate or embassy depending on the area you current stay.
Carry all your documents with 2 set of photocopies and 1 original set on the day of your appointment.Â
Note - Germans are very particular about order of the documents so make sure that all your documents are in the same order in all the sets.
