To become a full-fledged actuary, a person has to clear, through self-study, a series of examinations conducted by the Actuarial Society of India. The actuarial course involves basic techniques, communication, and advanced techniques in actuarial science, finance, life and general insurance. The total number of papers is 16, with examinations taking place twice a year; wherein one can give any number of papers at one goes.
However, there are a few insurance and actuarial science related courses offered at the graduation level by various universities. Student can take up these courses along with attempting to clear the actuarial sciences examination to provide them with a back-up, and also to set up a formal education environment.
A person planning to enter this profession should start studying at least three to four months before the examination, with stress on mathematics (integral calculus, higher algebra, etc.) and English (general essay-writing and precis).
The completion of the course is subject to clearance of all the papers. However, a general timeline for completing all would be three to four years, depending on an individual's capability.
