Please also note that most universities require published writing samples and very strong Statements of Purpose. This is mainly for those who're applying for Masters programs and above.
Therefore, please try to get your work published in peer-reviewed journals if you want to apply for research-based courses. An internship is equally important. Be careful about where you apply. Your internship must be really relevant to your course choice. And you should be able to say how that internship improved you. It's not enough to simply mention an internship on your resume.
