University of Southampton is inviting applications for MSc in Cyber Security programm

In this world of increasing information security threats, academic initiativesfocusing on cyber securityare being brought to the forefrontowing to the critical importance of the topic to commercial and academic organisations, as well as to governments and their citizens. There is currently a worldwide shortage of skilled practitioners in cyber security thereby making it an industry with a vast demand for trained professionals. In order to bridge this demand-supply gap, UK’s leading University of Southampton is inviting applications for its one year MSc in Cyber Securityprogramme commencing from September 2015.The programme is primarily aimed as a broadening qualification for computer science graduates, offers a multi-disciplinary perspective to the subject, giving students an excellent basis for a future career in the cyber security field.

Placed in the top 10% in the UK for the volume and quality of Computer Science research and ranked in the UK top ten for Computer Sciences by the 2015 Guardian and Times / Sunday Times Good University Guides, University of Southampton’s School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) is one of the most sought-after places in the world to study computer science and IT as well as its important advances in the past 10 years. What further adds to the advantage is that the university is one of the only eleven select universities that have been recognised as an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR) by the UK Government.

The one-year MSc in Cyber Security programme is specifically designed to give students a well-rounded, multi-disciplinary view of the subject area, embracing not only the technical subjects, but also aspects of criminology, risk management, law and social sciences. Featuring two semesters of taught modules on core topics like Foundations and implementation of Cyber Security, Management of Corporate Security, Corporate Risk Management Processes and Cyber Crime, Insecurity and the Dark Web (Cyber Security), students acquire selective knowledge followed by the dissertation/projects conducted in conjunction with an industrial partner.

Prospective employers for the course graduates may include established companies designing and marketing specific off-the-shelf security products, cyber security consultancy companies, military, intelligence agencies, crime prevention or investigation agencies. Graduates can also proceed for further research in industry or academia through various possibilities including, a Ph.D. qualification, or research assistant positions undertaking cyber security related research.

Any student holding a first-class or upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in Computer Scienceor a related discipline, such as Mathematics is eligible to apply for the programme.Interested candidates must clear an approved English test of IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 and at least 6.0 in each competency.

The last date to send in applications for the course is June 2015. The annual course fee for International students for the full-time programme is £18,640.
