#1
The University of Southampton’s Faculty of Humanities is inviting applications for its Film Studies undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses for September 2013 entry. The programme aims to teach students the latest developments in Film by world-class researchers and eminent published experts, in areas ranging from early film to contemporary Hollywood blockbusters.

Commenting on the programme, Prof. Tim Bergfelder (Head of Film Studies), said, “Film Studies has been taught in this University for almost thirty years, and our programmes have been consistently assessed in league tables as being among the best in the country in terms of the quality of our teaching and research, and particularly in terms of student support.”

Film is offered as a single honors degree and as a combined honors degree with English, History, Philosophy or Modern Languages (French, German or Spanish). The Faculty offers the following undergraduate programmes:
• BA Film and English (3 years)
• BA Film and French (4 years)
• BA Film and German (4 years)
• BA Film and History (3 years)
• BA Film and Philosophy (3 years)
• BA Film and Spanish (4 years)
• BA Film Studies (3 years)

The Faculty also offers the following postgraduate programmes, which are accompanied by separate seminar series that features eminent visiting speakers, including world-class academics and industry professionals:

• MA in Film Studies (1 year full time) – this long-established course addresses a wide variety of film cultures, from Hollywood to European and non-Western modes of film-making. It gives a comprehensive education in the major theoretical approaches to the subject; one of the most distinctive features of the programme is its emphasis on transnational or global perspectives on cinema.
• MA in Film and Cultural Management (1 year full time) – This innovative programme provides a deeper understanding of the film industry in the UK and globally and is designed for students who wish to combine study of film at postgraduate level with a knowledge of cultural management.

Film Studies is an exciting and challenging subject that provides a critical understanding of film as popular entertainment, theoretical discipline, industry and art form. “Apart from the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, we also offer a 'PhD by distance learning', and a four-year integrated PhD, which combines taught elements in the first year with the more traditional PhD format in subsequent years,” said Prof. Bergfelder.
